| Who we are.....
The Rattray Clan Society was created in 1993 with the aim of bringing together Rattrays and Rattray descendants from around the world. To date, over 400 people with Rattray connections have joined the Clan Society. The origins of the Rattray clan lie in Perthshire, where the clan drew the name from the Barony of Rattray. Although there have been several variations of the spelling of the clan name accepted fact is that the first laird of Rattray was Alanus de Ratheriff, who lived during the reign of King William the Lion ( 1165 -1214 ). Craighall, the ancient seat of the Rattray clan, is owned by Lachie and Nicky Rattray, who contend that the family has resided there for over 400 hundred years. The river Ericht winds its way through the village of Rattray and tumbles through a ravine far below the haughty perch of Craighall. Craighall itself is believed to be immortalized in the writings of Sir Walter Scott as Tullyveolan of Waverly fame. For those that are interested in Rattray history or hoping to find distant cousins, The Rattray Clan Society is an excellent opportunity. In 1996 and 2000, Rattrays from around the world met in Perthshire for 3 days of celebration. Thanks to a very extensive database of Rattrays containing over 28,000 entries maintained by Dr. Charles Bird of Alberta, many Society members have discovered kin and established life-long friendships.
